The core difference between multi-stage pumps and single-stage pumps lies in the number of impellers and the applicable scenarios


The following is a specific comparison:

Structural differences

Single-stage pump: With only one impeller, it features a simple structure, small size, light weight and convenient maintenance.

Multistage pumps: Two or more impellers are connected in series, the pump body is combined in sections, the number of components increases by 30% to 50%, and the maintenance complexity is higher.


Performance parameters

Single-stage pump: Head up to approximately 125 meters, suitable for low head requirements.

Multistage pump: It can exceed 200 meters and is suitable for high-lift scenarios (such as high-rise water supply and mine drainage). 

Single-stage pump: The flow rate can reach 1.5 to 2 times that of multi-stage pumps, suitable for high-flow working conditions (such as municipal drainage).

Multistage pump: The flow rate is relatively small, but it can be adjusted by increasing the number of impeller stages. 

Efficiency performance

Single-stage pump: It has high efficiency under low-head conditions, but its efficiency drops sharply at high heads (for example, the efficiency difference can reach 16% at a head of 30 meters).

Multistage pumps: Their efficiency in the high-head range is 10% to 15% higher than that of single-stage pumps, but their efficiency is relatively low in the low-head range. 

Application scenarios

Single-stage pump: Suitable for high-flow and low-pressure scenarios such as urban water supply and drainage, industrial cooling, and agricultural irrigation.

Multistage pumps: Suitable for high-lift demand scenarios such as water supply in high-rise buildings, long-distance water transportation, and high-pressure transportation in the petrochemical industry. 

Cost and Maintenance

Single-stage pump: Low initial investment and relatively low annual maintenance cost (as shown in the case of a chemical plant, the annual maintenance cost is 35% lower).

Multistage pumps: The initial investment is 20% to 40% higher, but the total life cycle cost may be lower (for example, the power plant case shows that the maintenance time is reduced by 25%).
