Why does ATACH 50Hz centrifugal pump need to increase the motor power or reduce the diameter of the impeller when operating at 60Hz?

When ATACH's 50Hz centrifugal pump is used at 60Hz conditions, the motor power needs to be increased or the impeller diameter needs to be reduced. 

This is mainly due to the direct proportion relationship between the motor speed and frequency (n = 60f/p, where f is the frequency and p is the pole pairs). 

When the frequency rises from 50Hz to 60Hz, the speed increases by 20%. 

This will cause significant changes in the pump's flow rate, head, and shaft power, which may exceed the original design range. 

Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the motor power or the impeller diameter to ensure safe and efficient operation. 

The impact of increased rotational speed on centrifugal pump performance: According to the similarity law, the flow rate Q of the pump is directly proportional to the rotational speed n, the head H is directly proportional to the square of the rotational speed n, and the shaft power P is directly proportional to the cube of the rotational speed n. 


For example, when the rotational speed increases by 20%, the flow rate increases by approximately 20%, the head increases by approximately 44%, and the shaft power increases by approximately 73%. 

This means that the output power of the pump significantly increases at 60Hz. If the motor power remains unchanged, it may be damaged due to overload; at the same time, the increase in head and flow rate may cause the pump to deviate from the efficient zone, leading to cavitation or vibration and other problems. 

The necessity of increasing the motor power: Since the shaft power increases cubically with the rotational speed, the original 50Hz motor may not be able to provide sufficient power, resulting in overheating or burning of the motor. 

Increasing the motor power can ensure the driving capacity and avoid overload, but it needs to be matched with the mechanical strength of the pump and the bearing carrying capacity. 

The adjustment effect of cutting the impeller diameter: The cutting of the impeller diameter can reduce the diameter, lower the performance curve of the pump, thereby limiting the increase in flow rate and head.

1 .By reducing the impeller diameter, the power increase caused by the increase in rotational speed can be offset, allowing the pump to still operate in the efficient zone at higher frequencies, while reducing energy consumption and mechanical stress. 


2. This method is applicable to scenarios where the traffic demand can be adjusted, but precise calculation of the cutting quantity is necessary to avoid low efficiency. 

Comprehensive adjustment considerations: In practical applications, it may be necessary to combine speed regulation and impeller cutting to broaden the adjustment range and optimize efficiency. 

For example, initially adjust the performance by cutting the impeller, and then combine it with the adjustment of the motor power to ensure the stable operation of the system.
